Tiscali
Tiscali deployed Cisco Service Control Engines ()SCE) across the core network infrastructure in order to increase the level of control and management on the IP traffic volumes for their DSL Broadband customer base. The specific purpose of the deployment was to control Peer2Peer traffic volumes.
The deployment of the SCE achieved better management of traffic volumes and classification, however there were specific challenges in the day-to-day operational environment:  
 
  - No real-time monitoring of any increase in IP traffic volumes
  - No real-time monitoring of any breach of thresholds
  - No reporting capability on traffic volumes and thresholds across the SCE platform
  - No reactive and graphical profiling of the traffic volumes against each class of traffic
  - No historical representation of volumes for each class of traffic for trend analysis
  - No dynamic or proactive management control
We were asked to analyse and capture the requirements of key operational functions within Tiscali to further develop a reporting environment enabling near real-time visibility into SCE operation. This would then provide better reactive management of the network resources and a level of proactive capability.
Our solution as the diagram shows was to create an environment that interacted with existing components in the Tiscali platform.
The solution entailed creating 3 new components:  
  - Aggregation Database
  - Reporting Engine
  - Alarm System
The solution initially entailed designing and installing a new database resident on a new server. This database was to hold all the data collected from the Collection systems. This new database was then the single repository for reporting & alarm purposes. This database was designed to hold a year’s historic data.
The reporting engine was a web based solution providing near real-time views of utilization. The reporting engine was capable of generating reports from the historic data and email the reports as required.
The alarm component analyzed the data within the new database to generate alarms if exceptions were found. The alarms were in the form of SNMP traps forwarded to an existing monitoring suite.
